Of course, their initial attraction is legendary. It is hard to dispute the sensual allure that legs adorned with nylon stockings create. Actresses, dancers, burlesque performers and everyday people continue to slide on their stockings to add a spice to their lives and the lives of others who are lucky enough to be treated to a glimpse of the welt. But they are so much more… Nylon stockings have a rich & complex history that tell a story of technology & design, industry titans, unions and workers rights, marketing & advertising and of course, the sex appeal… all set during the second phase of the industrial revolution and at a time of world war.

They first went on sale to the wider public at Gimbels department store in Herald Square, New York City, in the spring of 1940.

On 15 May 1940, the day of their commercial debut, Vogue provided its readers with a tongue and cheek exposé on the “facts and fables” of this new scientific wonder, noting: “Tantalised almost to a frenzy by the fascinating rumours, women are at last going to see them, buy them, wear them. Sight unseen, nylon stockings became a ‘Topic of Conversation’; now, at last, they’re a tangible, demonstrable fact.”

Today marks our 6th year celebrating this iconic holiday here on Nylon Stocking Day, and somehow the obsession with sheer glamour only keeps getting stronger.
Whether you’re teasing a backseam beneath a skirt, letting a flash of sheer nylon turn heads, or saving your favorite pair for later tonight… today is about indulging in the glamour, confidence, and irresistible allure that only stockings can bring.
But Nylon Stocking Day is about more than sheer elegance and sexy style. It’s also a celebration of one of the most influential fashion revolutions of the twentieth century. When nylon stockings first appeared after their debut at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, demand exploded overnight. By May 15, 1940, department stores across America were mobbed as women lined up for blocks to buy what quickly became the most desired accessory of the era.
More than eight decades later, nylon stockings still have the power to captivate, tempt, and draw every eye in the room.
And helping set the mood for this year’s celebration once again is the always stunning @Den_of_Justice, who graciously allowed us to feature her photo for the occasion. Her page is filled with elegant vintage-inspired nylon glamour and is absolutely worth a follow.
