Simply put, we find nylon stockings to be both beautiful and fascinating. They are, at the same time, tremendously powerful and yet so delicate. So simple in function, yet produced using a highly complex manufacturing process.
Of course, their initial attraction is legendary. It is hard to dispute the sensual allure that legs adorned with nylon stockings create. Actresses, dancers, burlesque performers and everyday people continue to slide on their stockings to add a spice to their lives and the lives of others who are lucky enough to be treated to a glimpse of the welt. But they are so much more… Nylon stockings have a rich & complex history that tell a story of technology & design, industry titans, unions and workers rights, marketing & advertising and of course, the sex appeal… all set during the second phase of the industrial revolution and at a time of world war.

Before then, stockings were mostly made of delicate silk — hard to wash, easy to ruin. But thanks to DuPont chemist Wallace Hume Carothers, who invented the world’s first fully synthetic fiber in 1935, nylon changed everything.
85 years ago today… May 15, 1940, nylon stockings hit store shelves — and chaos ensued. Millions of pairs sold out in days, sparking a frenzy known as the Nylon Riots. Women lined up for blocks, desperate to get their hands on this modern miracle.
Today, we honor the legacy of nylon stockings — timeless, sensual, and endlessly inspiring. Here’s to another year of celebrating sheer beauty and unstoppable style.
